Ceremonial reopening of the Char Narayan Temple in Patan on 29.01.2020
The Char Narayana temple (built-in 1566) is the oldest multi-tiered temple on Patan Darbar Square. It was completely destroyed by the 2015 earthquake. In a remarkable effort, and within weeks after the earthquake, the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust (KVPT) and the Department of Archaeology (Government of Nepal) enabled its reconstruction, preserving and reusing all those historical materials that had been rescued.
The 35 month-long rebuilding effort, executed by over 100 craftsmen, workers, and professionals, was also facilitated with the support of SAI HELP NEPAL, the post-earthquake fundraising initiative at the South Asia Institute, Heidelberg University.
The inauguration will take place in the presence of the Nepalese Minister of Culture and the U.S. Ambassador on 29 January 2020. NHDP is proud that several of its team members have also been involved in the HelpNepal initiative.
More detailed documentation of the monument can be found in our open-access database DANAM.
