Exploring Nuwakot, a Medieval Newar Town historically linked to the Kathmandu Valley
In a comprehensive effort, the NHDP Heidelberg team, consisting of Christiane Brosius, Axel Michaels, and Rajan Khatiwoda, along with Patan team members Anil Basukala, Bijay Basukala, Yogesh Budathoki, Bharat Maharjan, Pankaj Maharjan, and Ravi Shakya, conducted an extensive survey of Nuwakot on 11-12 March. Nuwakot, historically serving as a vital trade route to Tibet and China during medieval to pre-modern times, was the focal point of this endeavour.
The team mapped over 60 historical sites in Nuwakot, some of which had not been previously documented, or even taken notice of. Members of the local government welcomed the team, expressing support for the documentation of these sites. Led by the deputy mayor and various local government officials, and accompanied by local residents, the team was received at the town gate.
The mayor's office has disseminated news of this initiative through various social and local media platforms, highlighting the importance of preserving Nuwakot's rich historical heritage. The NHDP will spend approximately two months documenting the mapped medieval and pre-modern monuments and sites.
