The Sukulaḍhokā Maṭha, also known as the 'Sundara Maṭha' (DANAM ID: BKT0390), is a significant ascetic (Daśanāmī) monastery in Bhaktapur that holds a prominent position within the historical and cultural fabric of the region. The epithet 'Sundara Maṭha' signifies its architectural uniqueness amidst its surroundings. Its roots can be traced back to the endowments made by Lakṣmaṇa Purī Gosāyi in 1744 CE, establishing a legacy of patronage. Ranked as the sixth among the ensemble of 12 maṭhas in Bhaktapur, this site serves as a testament to the enduring importance of spiritual practices and architectural legacy. Featuring intricate windows and a dedicated worship area for the mahanta, the leader of the Maṭha, this structure embodies the convergence of religious rituals and architectural craftsmanship. Its sanctum enshrines a śivaliṅga, specifically Vāṇeśvara Mahādeva. In 1976 CE, the Bhaktapur Development Project, with support from the German government, undertook its reconstruction, ensuring its conservation for the generations to come. Serving as a living repository of Bhaktapur's cultural heritage, the 'Sundara Maṭha' serves as a crucial link connecting contemporary endeavors with the continuity of history, inviting exploration and contemplation.
